Morris Arboretum Presents Bloomfield Farm Day
Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania
Sun, Oct 23, 2011, noon - 3pm
Tickets: $16 adults, $14 seniors, $7 students, free for members
Springfield Mill, which dates back to 1760, is located on the Bloomfield Farm side of the Morris Arboretum, across the street from the Arboretum’s main entrance on Northwestern Avenue. The Mill is one of the oldest architectural features at Morris Arboretum and contains the most complete inventory of original mill works and related machinery of any mill in the area. The content of the mill provides a unique opportunity to interpret 19th century agriculture and milling. Visitors will have the chance to tour the Springfield Mill, and learn about production methods of that time.
An educational and entertaining demonstration of wool production, complete with grazing sheep, will highlight 19th century agriculture. Members of the Philadelphia Guild of Handweavers, who will demonstrate spinning and carding, and an exhibit of natural dyes made from plants will introduce the production process. Also on site will be an Herbalist, who distills plants for their medicinal value.
Location:
100 E. Northwestern Ave
Philadelphia, PA 19118
