Lundale Farm, near Pughtown in northern Chester County was the home of Eleanor Morris, founder of the French and Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust. The property, which is still in the family and protected under a conservation easement, contains a forested slope underlain by gneiss geology that will be the first stop on our trip. The forest has a high degree of structural integrity as a result of hunting pressure, which has prevented the devastation of shrub and herbaceous layers by deer. We will access the slope via the Horseshoe Trail that traverses the site. Although we haven't yet seen this site in the spring time, all indications are that there will be a diverse array of wildflowers, trees, and shrubs including several rare species. We will go to Warwick County Park, which is nearby, for lunch. The diabase geology that underlies the park will provide us with additional opportunities for botanizing. Bring a lunch and something to drink. We will travel together by bus from the Arboretum. Park in the meadow next to the entrance kiosk.
