Birding at Hildacy Farm and Sycamore Mills
Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania
Fri, May 4, 2012, 7:30am - 2:30pm
Tickets: Members: $55; Non-members: $60
On this birding adventure we will visit the 55-acre Hildacy Farm Preserve in nearby Media, PA and Sycamore Mills, part of Ridley Creek State Park. The Preserve, which is the headquarters for the Natural Lands Trust, contains a diversity of habitats that attract abundant wildlife, particularly birds. The Preserve features miles of unpaved trails, native grass meadows, a creek and its floodplain, and woodlands with several large oak specimens. Bluebirds are plentiful here, where native grasslands grow as tall as seven feet high. In spring, the Preserve's recently established wetland is alive with turtles, wood ducks, red-wing blackbirds and other birds. Sycamore Mills was a small 18th century village that grew up around the site of a mill. We will walk along the creek where birding is good. The miller's house, the office and library, and several small mill workers' dwellings still exist and are currently used as private residences. This area of the park is on the National Register of Historic Places. Bring binoculars, your lunch, and something to drink. We will park in the meadow next to the Kiosk and travel by bus.
