Birding at Long Pond: An Important Bird Area

This trip will take us to Long Pond at the edge of the Pocono Plateau not far from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. This is one of the great birding sites in northeastern Pennsylvania and an area designated as an Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society. Birds that are rare throughout most of the state are commonplace at Long Pond. The habitats it offers are very diverse. You can find birds that live in early successional woodlands as well as birds that prefer wetlands and northern forest habitats. It is possible to see an American bittern, a soaring osprey, or spot a northern harrier flying low over a bog. In the moist brushy wetlands and scrub, Canada warbler is locally abundant. Typical birds of the boreal forest like Nashville warbler can be found in the woods or shrubland and birds that prefer conifers like blue-headed vireo, magnolia, yellow-rumped, black-throated green, and blackburnian warblers can be found in this landscape. Bring binoculars, your lunch, and something to drink. We will park in the meadow next to the entrance kiosk and travel by van.
