Four Receive Chanticleer Scholarships for Professional Development
Tuesday, July 27, 2010, Wayne, PA - The Chanticleer Foundation is pleased to announce the following individuals as recipients of the Chanticleer Scholarship in Professional Development for 2010:
Andrew Bunting, Curator of the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA, will use the Chanticleer Scholarship to participate in a botanical expedition in Sichuan, China in September 2010. The trip was planned and will be led by Bill McNamara of Quarryhill Botanical Garden, Glen Ellen, CA. Mr. McNamara was the 2010 Scott Medal and Award recipient in recognition of the work he has done at Quarryhill and with the flora of China. Additional participants include Andy Hill, University of British Columbia Botanical Garden, Canada, and Christophe Crock, Arboretum Wespelaar, Belgium.
Stephanie Jutila, Director of Member Programs and Outreach for the American Horticultural Society, Alexandria, VA, will attend the course Leading for Organizational Impact: The Looking Glass Experience being offered by the Center for Creative Leadership. The course looks at the fundamentals of effective leadership - self-awareness, communication, influence, and learning agility.
Jennifer Lee, Senior Horticulturist at the Shaw Nature Reserve of the Missouri Botanical Garden, Gray Summit, MO, will use the Chanticleer Scholarship to attend a three-day American Management Association seminar entitled Leadership Skills for Supervisors. The seminar will cover communication, conflict resolution, and leadership techniques.
MaryLynn Mack, Deputy Director of the Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, AZ, participated in the Museum Leadership Institute (MLI) held at the Getty Center in Los Angeles in July, 2010. MLI is the executive development opportunity of the Getty Leadership Institute. This in-depth, residential program enhances the skills of experienced museum executives and strengthens their institutions’ capabilities. The three-week program will directly impact the Desert Botanical Garden as Ms. Mack helps develop its next five-year plan.
These individuals join five other Chanticleer Scholars: Mark Dwyer, Rotary Botanical Gardens, Janesville, Wisconsin; Brian Houck, Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago, IL; Adrienne Roethling, Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden, Kernersville, NC; Ian Simpkins, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Miami, FL; and Brian Sullivan, Descanso Gardens, La Canada, CA.
The Chanticleer Scholarship provides professional development opportunities for public garden staff. The Scholarship began in 2008 and promotes creativity and leadership. It has two core components; academic study to improve leadership skills and support of travel to meet with leaders to build on that academic experience.
As part of the program, each Scholar spends time at Chanticleer, a 35-acre pleasure garden in Wayne, Pennsylvania, about 30 minutes west of Philadelphia, and has the opportunity to visit other gardens. For more information on the Scholarship or the garden, visit the garden’s website. The next Scholarship application deadlines are November 1, 2010 and July 1, 2011.
