2010 EVENTS AND EXHIBITS AT HAGLEY

Hagley Museum and Library (January 28, 2010)
New Winter Hours! The museum will now be open daily 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. year round. From January 4 to March 12, 2010, the museum’s winter hours will feature special guided tours at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. During these weekday tours, visitors will be escorted through the property by a guide who will interpret the 235-acre. The tour is included in the cost of admission. On weekends, guided tours of Eleutherian Mills are offered every half hour; other parts of the property are self guided.
JANUARY
January 16, 17, 18 – Saturday, Sunday, Monday – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Invention Convention
Children enjoy three days of inventing, experimenting, and interactive educational entertainment. Activities include a Create-an-Invention Workshop where youngsters design and produce gadgets, a Tinkering Table to take apart and fiddle with appliances, a science-related scavenger hunt, and a Toddler Tools area for the youngest to play with sets from the kitchen and carpentry shop. Admission charged and includes cost of supplies, free for members. Use Hagley’s Buck Road East entrance off Route 100 in Wilmington, Delaware.

Brandywine Valley Open House

Melanie Gustafson, University of Vermont, will present her paper, "Beautiful Faces, Strong Bodies: Harriet Hubbard Ayer and the Business of Beauty Culture in Gilded Age America,” in the Copeland Room of Hagley Library. Victorine’s Valentine’s Day
Families will love this afternoon of crafts and activities. Visitors taste gingerbread, make a Victorian Valentine using the “scrap” method, write Valentine verses with a quill pen, and design a candy bar wrapper. A special exhibit featuring antique Valentine cards and candy packaging will be on display. Activities are included in regular admission. Exhibit in Eleutherian Mills Opens
Remember Me: du Pont Family Keepsake Portraits
The exhibit showcases small portrait miniatures and other portraits of du Pont family members which have been cherished over the years. Of special interest are portrait miniatures depicting the founder of the DuPont Company, E. I. and his wife Sophie, as well as his brother Victor’s family. This exhibit is on display in the du Pont family ancestral home, Eleutherian Mills. Included in regular admission and tour. Free for members. Use Hagley’s main entrance off of Route 141 in Wilmington, Delaware.

The DFVA Spring Art Show
The Delaware Foundation for the Visual Arts (DFVA) brings together more than seventy well-known artists from the Brandywine Valley area to exhibit and sell new works. Browse this exceptional collection of original art, sculpture, porcelain, jewelry, and a choice selection of furniture. Event admission is $5 for not-yet members, free for members and children under eighteen. Use Hagley’s Buck Road East entrance off Route 100 in Wilmington, Delaware.

May Day Nature Walk

Wilmington Trust Presents Fireworks at Hagley
Hagley presents a pyrotechnic masterpiece that weaves together a story illustrated through music, narration, aerial shells, and intricate set pieces. Must be a member of Hagley to purchase tickets. Rain dates June 12 or 13 and June 19 or 20. Use Hagley’s Buck Road East entrance off Route 100 in Wilmington, Delaware.

Gunpowder in American History
Hagley Creek Kids invite families to learn about the different uses for gunpowder in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Programs include music, games and leisure activities, history, food, and make-and-take crafts. Included in regular museum admission. Free for members. Hagley Car Show
Browse through more than 500 antique and restored cars that date from the early nineteen-hundreds to the nineteen-eighties. The show features vehicle parades, motoring music, video and go-cart racing, and a festival food court. Activities are on Hagley’s upper property. Admission charged. OCTOBER

Hagley Craft Fair
This artisans’ marketplace brings talented artisans from the Mid-Atlantic area to display and sell fine arts and crafts. This premier show will feature works in wood, pottery, jewelry, fibers, metal, and other media. Admission is $5, free for members and children under six years old. NOVEMBER

Fall Conference: “Crisis and Consequence”
Hagley’s Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society invites you to attend the conference, “Crisis and Consequence.” The conference takes place in Hagley’s Soda House and will include presentations that explore the long-term consequences of panics, depression, financial contractions, and other episodes in which the American economy dramatically declined. Christmas at Hagley exhibit opens
See the du Pont family ancestral home, Eleutherian Mills, dressed for the holidays. “Christmas at Hagley” features a different theme each year. Check www.hagley.org for family activities, special sales days at the Hagley Store, and other events and programs. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The first bus leaves for the exhibit at 10 a.m. and the last bus at 3:30 p.m. The holiday display is included in the cost of admission and free for members.

Nineteenth-Century Patent Models: Innovation in Miniature
See more than 100 patent models dating to the nineteenth century. The United States Patent Office required applicants to submit a working model of their inventions no bigger than twelve inches square in addition to supporting documents. The exhibit includes patents created by women inventors, transportation-related models, inventions that help with laundry and other household chores, and more. Exhibit-only admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children six through fourteen, and free for children five and under. Exhibit included in regular admission. Free for members. Christmas at Hagley
The1803 du Pont ancestral home, Eleutherian Mills, is decorated primarily in Colonial Revival style for the holidays. Dried flowers, greenery, fruits, and other natural materials create a beautiful holiday ambiance accentuated by soft lights and Christmas music. Exhibit included in regular admission.
